School plays a major role not only in our children’s education, but also in their health and wellbeing as well. In addition to spending more time with students than their own parents, school administrators are well versed in child development. Teachers and administrators need to be vigilant when students return to school, whether online or in-class. Tooth decay is a leading cause of absenteeism.

Many students are no longer worried about bad breath, a major motivator to brush their teeth, since they wear masks and attend school behind a computer screen.

School resources are stretched thin, so tooth decay may seem like a minor issue to add to schools’ already long list of responsibilities.‍

There’s just one problem: it’s not a minor one.‍

School-aged children suffer the consequences of dental disease, as they miss out on nearly two million school days a year. Those coming from underprivileged families and minority groups are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay due to lack of access to necessary oral health care. This increases the risk of impaired cognitive development, social deficits, low self-esteem, and obstacles to getting a job in later life. According to the CDC, COVID-19 will have a significant impact on the dental health of America’s poorest communities, so oral health education should be emphasized as soon as possible. Schools can play a significant role in improving the oral health of their students to help improve their performance in school and overall quality of life.

Here are some easy ways schools can improve student and parent knowledge about oral health as well as serve as a gateway to preventive care.

THE ADMINISTRATORS ARE:

Support and host School Screening & Sealant events at your school. These events help prevent tooth decay in the first place, and help connect kids with dental care providers.

You can distribute toothbrushes to students who receive free lunches at school or who receive lunch delivery during the pandemic. Food insecure students are also likely to lack toothbrushes or share them with their families. To educate parents about the importance of preventing tooth decay, distribute educational materials and place them in school offices.

INSTRUCTORS:

Here are some excellent ways to incorporate oral health education into the classroom:

Talk to students about proper oral health with dental health professionals.

Teach your students what a healthy mouth looks like, as well as how to identify early signs of oral disease and how to prevent or treat it.

Students should be taught about the barriers to dental care faced by some families

Make oral health a part of science, nutrition, or arts and crafts lessons.

Make posters about oral health and hang them around the school, especially the cafeteria.

Educate pre-teens and teens about vaping’s effect on oral health and the effects of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs on their smiles.

Children should bring healthy snacks to class and drink water rather than sugary beverages. Even classroom celebrations, such as birthdays, can include cake and fruit, as well as water to flush out the sugar.

The Mouth Heroes for Schools multimedia resource provides teachers with the tools to teach children aged 5–9 about the importance of good oral health.

NURSES IN SCHOOL:

Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and rinse to a school with a high number of children who qualify for free or reduced lunches or hold a Smile Drive at your school.

Give students a free oral health assessment by asking about personal hygiene practices (brushing twice a day, visiting the dentist often, flossing, food they eat at home).
